Poles and Jews, Separate Deaths?
To the Editors:
While the news report "Polish Passions Damage Two Works" in your March 2001 issue is laudably written, it nevertheless contains a significantly misleading statement. I am referring to the parenthetical remark in the discussion of the attack on Piotr Ulanski's installation The Nazis: "(Six million Poles, approximately one fifth of the country's entire population, died under Nazi occupation.)" This figure of "six million" wrongly includes three million Jews.
