Sixties assemblage might be thought of as the funky grand-daddy of all that contemporary art that's made from shiny Home Depot and slick Toys R Us detritus. Forty years ago, California assemblage artists manipulated found objects into formal conundrums and cultural critiques with effects not dissimilar to those in pieces by, say, Sarah Sze, Chris Finley and Jason Rhoades. This packed exhibition of over 40 works by the underknown '60s assemblagists Gordon Wagner and John Bernhardt revealed two distinct, evocative oeuvres concocted out of rusted machinery, tattered signage and battered wood.
Both artists came to assemblage from Abstract-Expressionist painting. ...
