Gary Cooper was the sort of American one seldom sees nowadays; tall, lean, radiating integrity and dignity, the very embodiment of middle American values.
And although quite possibly a complete coincidence, following Cooper's death from lung cancer in 1961 the America of the old truths and certainties vanished.
In 1969 the French writer Romain Gary wrote a novel based on this coincidence entitled Adieu, Gary Cooper, in which the hero lamenting the actor's death comments, 'It's finished Gary Cooper. Finished forever. Finished ...
