The origins and background of Christopher Columbus to this day are a mystery and an enigma. After much study, the biographical detectives are convinced of only one thing -- that he was not Genovese, or even Italian. What hints or statements may have been among his papers, we will never know, for after his death his family destroyed all his papers. The only conceivable explanation of this can be that he left records which would have brought expulsion or death by the Holy Office and the Castilian monarchy, to a family now safely ensconced in Catholic Spain.
