A George W. Bush's administration prepares to govern, one wildlife issue is sure to spark intense debate: opening up the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling and development.
First set aside by President Eisenhower 40 years ago, this unbroken landscape of arctic and subarctic habitat is home to such a wealth of wildlife that it has been dubbed "America's Serengeti." Polar and grizzly bear, caribou, musk ox, Dall sheep, wolf, arctic fox, and more than 100 species of migratory birds use the land. Twenty-one species of marine mammals live in the waters off the refuge.
