The state Department of Transportation has designs on a faster, more efficient way to build expensive things.
New legislation signed into law by Gov. Gary Locke allows the use of "design-build" contracts, which can save time by allowing engineering and construction to go on simultaneously.
Experience has shown that there can be pitfalls - including higher costs.
But the state's new secretary of transportation, Doug MacDonald, has hailed the new law as an "important reform" and said "the design-build process is innovative and can deliver high-quality projects under the right circumstances."
