The Uganda Chamber of Mines, meanwhile, has appealed to the UN not to impose sanctions on Ugandan mineral exports because the metals and minerals mentioned by the UN are being exploited in Uganda. The chamber says that there are more than 500,000 artisanal miners, many of them women, who derive their livelihoods from mining activities and they would be adversely affected by sanctions.
According to the chamber, gold is mined in the Karamoja, Mubende, Buhweju, Mashonga, Madi, Busia, Ibanda, Kayonza and Butogota districts; cobalt is being recovered from pyrite tailings at the Kilembe mine by Kasese Cobalt Co. Ltd, which is a major employer in the area; and `coltan' ...
