The picture hangs in my office now, a 16 by 20 photograph of Perry Como, my mother, my aunt Lorraine and me. It used to hang in my mother's kitchen. It used to bring her joy just to look at it.
My mother met Perry Como because of me. But I knew him and his music because of her.
"Dream along with me, I'm on my way to the stars," he sang and she did, too. She played his records, hummed his songs and every Saturday night at 8 o'clock she turned on the TV to watch his show, and I sat beside her and dreamed along, too.
