It's hard to imagine a more romantic image of going to work than the following passage, which ran in The New York Times on March 22, 2001, as part of a report on the old-fashioned showgirl: "Some people ride to work on the subway. 'I came down on a star.'"
Janu Tornell, who provided this unforgettable image, is just one of many women who spoke to the Times' reporter about her days of performing live on stage in Las Vegas. Another dancer, this one a retiree, remembered a time when the show's announcer told the audience that she looked like Venus, the Roman goddess.
