FREE PRESS NAMES NEW PUBLISHER

DETROIT, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert J. Hall, president of the Detroit Free Press, today was named publisher and chairman of the newspaper. Hall succeeds David Lawrence Jr., publisher and chairman of the Free Press since 1985, who today was named publisher and chairman of The Miami Herald.

The appointments were announced in Miami by James K. Batten, president and CEO of Knight-Ridder Inc., the Miami-based parent company of the Free Press and the Herald, and in Detroit by P. Anthony Ridder, president of Knight-Ridder's newspaper division. The appointments are effective Sept. 1.
