Imagine a baseball game in which no gloves were used, pitchers were warned for throwing balls outside the strike zone and the lone umpire asks base runners, fielders and even spectators to assist in making calls, with the utmost confidence that an honest ruling would be made.
Such a scene may seem straight out of a sandlot, but all of the oddities were part of the roots of Major League Baseball.
