As a reaction to an article about the Palestinian conflict I have recently written in German, a Muslim objected to my erroneous terming jihad as "holy war," as I was simply copying the misinterpretation developed by European Orientalists. Luckily, I am in good company since the Webster dictionary also defines jihad as "a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims." The same definition of Dschihad is given by the German Duden dictionary. Muslims often emphasise that jihad has no direct connotation with war, as it merely means "striving" or "effort."
