WASHINGTON -- Recent debates over care for terminally ill patients have focused on their need for better pain management. But pain management alone is not enough-their psychological needs also must be addressed with the kind of care that requires a team approach, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel said at a briefing sponsored by the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Emanuel, chief of the department of clinical bioethics at the National Institute of Health's Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center, Bethesda, Md., and his colleagues interviewed 988 terminally ill patients, their physicians, and caregivers to determine how patients felt about physician-assisted suicide ...
