May 19--Hoping to win broader support from shareholders, customers and members of the public, First Union Corp. and SunTrust Banks Inc. have stepped up their attacks on each other's pursuit of banking company Wachovia Corp.
SunTrust, which announced an unsolicited bid for Wachovia on Monday, promoted its offer for the Winston-Salem, N.C., institution with ads in newspapers throughout North Carolina and South Carolina this week.
SunTrust said Friday it will run another series of merger-related ads in the five newspapers next week.
