When Archie Clapp retired two years ago from a desk job in Northern Virginia, he was determined to leave the Washington beltway far behind. He searched for a calmer place, maybe near the ocean.
He found Atlantic Shores, a retirement community off Dam Neck Road in Virginia Beach.
``Northern Virginia was just getting uninhabitable. It was a constant hassle,'' the 77-year-old Clapp said.
Clapp is part of a trend that has turned Hampton Roads - Virginia Beach, in particular - into a haven for the elderly. The proof is in census figures to be released today for every city and county in Virginia.
