BOONE -- No two ways about it, Jesse Helms is enjoying himself.

Late on a Sunday afternoon, the Senate Foreign Relations chairman steps from the back seat of his car, which has slowly passed through a line of student protesters outside his fund-raiser. One of the protesters is dressed as a duck, and another carries a sign that says, "Jesse Ducks Debates."

Inside Shadracks, a sprawling, family-style barbecue restaurant that's familiar ground to a man who first ran for Senate in 1972, there are 500 supporters waiting for him.
