KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Jason Varitek is Teddy Roosevelt's kind of guy.
He speaks softly and carries a big stick.
After bashing three homers and driving in seven runs Sunday, eye-popping career-best totals for the Boston Red Sox catcher, the modest Varitek sounded as if he were the proverbial blind squirrel who was just plain lucky he found one acorn, never mind three.
"Honestly, I was just trying to hit the ball hard," said Varitek after the Red Sox had blasted the Kansas City Royals, 10-3, at Kauffman Stadium in the rubber game of the three-game series.
