1988 was a watershed year in the maturation of consumer mail order in the United States. While new companies employing the mail order or direct order method of selling, plus the sales from a number of aggressive mail order marketers contributed to an overall 8 percent growth for U.S. mail order sales, this growth rate is significantly down from previous years.
