May 22--Extended Stay America's headquarters has been in Fort Lauderdale, but its roots have been firmly planted in South Carolina since 1999.
George D. Johnson Jr., Extended Stay's chief executive, sold his $7 million Fort Lauderdale home and moved himself and his family back to Spartanburg nearly two years ago. And eight of his top 10 lieutenants have ties to the South Carolina area.
Johnson -- who founded Extended Stay with Miami Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga in 1995 -- wouldn't talk about his motivations for relocating the company. Reached on his cellphone, ...
