THE phenomenal success of Tate Modern in its first year has made it by far the most popular museum of contemporary art in the world and the third most popular visitor attraction in Britain.
The detailed figures of its first year in operation have disclosed that it attracted 5.2 million visitors - more than three times the 1.6 million visiting its nearest rival, Paris's Pompidou Centre.
At home, Tate Modern rocketed to third place in the list of popular attractions behind the Dome, which attracted 6.5 million, and the British Museum, which pulled in 5.7 million.
