* AstraZeneca announced that its new proton pump inhibitor Nexium (esomeprazole) is now available in pharmacies nationwide. Nexium is derived from, and is designed to replace, Priosec, AstraZenecas top-selling heartburn/GERD drug, which is losing its original patent in April.
However, AstraZeneca has submitted four patents to the FDA for listing in the "Orange Book." The patents were filed between September of last year and this March, and their listing prevents approval of generic versions.
