May 20--A former employee can sometimes pose a greater threat to a company than a wobbly market or a shaky economy.
Companies are finding that some employees collect more than unused vacation pay on their way out the door -- they take trade secrets, copyrighted software programs and other intellectual property.
The problem is widespread: Theft of proprietary information cost Fortune 1000 companies more than $45 billion in 1999, according to a study done by the American Society for Industrial Security and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
