HAY FEVER, otherwise known as seasonal allergic rhinitis or, less commonly, pollenosis, is an allergy to a variety of pollens and fungal spores. It is misery. And this year a unique combination of the foot-and-mouth epidemic and the worst rainfall on record means that pollen counts are likely to be exceptionally high.

With hundreds of thousands of livestock being culled, pastures are being left ungrazed - allowing far more pollen to be released. Likewise, the deluge of rainfall has made grass particularly abundant.
