THE PRE-ELECTION row over race flared today. It was triggered by a speech by Foreign Secretary Robin Cook in which he called on William Hague to "lead by example" and send out a more "positive message" to his party over immigration.
In a speech today to the Centre for the Open Society in London, Mr Cook is expected to dismiss the idea of an ethnically pure British race as "a fantasy", while describing immigration as "necessary and desirable" for the UK's economy and society.
He will hail the achievements of foreign cultures in Britain, including making chicken tikka masala the UK's true national dish.
