The history of Great Britain, like that of all nations, is a tapestry woven from the deeds of great leaders set amid the underlying strands of geography and demographics. Few other nations, however, have produced so many first-rank historians who have played a role beyond the mere recording of history. Sir Thomas More, Lord Clarendon, Thomas Babington Macaulay and Sir Winston Churchill made history as well as wrote about it. So too did A.J.P. Taylor, the Oxford don turned media celebrity and critic of the Cold War-era policies of the Western powers.
