DALLAS _ A strike against American Airlines Inc. became a real possibility Wednesday night after federal mediators declared an impasse in contract talks between the airline and its flight attendants' union.
The National Mediation Board offered arbitration Wednesday evening to the airline and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants after three days of intense negotiations, including discussions that went past midnight Monday and Tuesday.
John Ward, the union's president, said that the union board probably would reject the arbitration but that a final decision would come when members meet _ probably next week.
