The expectant crowds gathered quietly along Queen's Quay in Londonderry, among them doctors and nurses. The blacked-out wharfside buzzed with the rapidly spreading news that the pride of the World War 2 German fleet had been sunk.

They were waiting for the Royal Navy ship Tartar, which had on board the wounded and shocked sailors who had survived the bombing and sinking of the Mashona, shortly after it had taken part in the pursuit of the flagship of the German navy, the Bismarck.
