LEAVENWORTH -- Like a fleeting gift from the gods, they poke their peculiarly pitted, brownish-black cones above the needles and brush in the pine forests of the eastern Cascade Range for only a few weeks each spring.
Your heart is set aflutter when you first see them, especially a fine specimen, or a cluster of them.
These are morels -- pronounced "more-ELS" -- possibly the most hunted, most cherished wild mushroom in North America.
Over time, you come to enjoy their odd beauty as much as you savor their earthy flavor.
