A fire retardant vinyl ester resin that is said to meet ASTM E 84 Class 1 flame spread and smoke rating has been announced by Alpha Owens-Corning LLC, Collierville, Tenn. The resin is a highly brominated bisphenol-A epoxy-based vinyl ester (HBVE) that meets the current ASTM E 84 Class 1 rating for flame spread and smoke development. To meet this rating, the laminate must have a flame spread of 25 or less and a smoke development of 450 or less. It provides a unique combination of good flame and smoke resistance and inherently good mechanical properties. For cast HBVE, tensile strength is 80 MPa (11.6 ksi); tensile modulus is 3380 MPa (490 ksi); and flexural modulus is 3800 ...
