Every Sunday morning for almost two decades, this bearded, ooh-arring, Worzel-Gummidge-with-his-clever- head-on pipe smoker greeted urban viewers from his rustic farmhouse, offering them a quaint depiction of an idyllic countryside that seemed to be all nestling villages, old farmers chewing on straw, gaily-painted Romany caravans, and gently bleating sheep.
