Article: Senate passes tax cut; White House next stop.

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2001

The U.S. Senate on Saturday approved a $1.35 trillion tax package giving American taxpayers across-the-board income tax reductions over the next 10 years and handing President Bush his first major legislative victory. It is the largest tax reduction since 1981.

The Senate passed the bill on a 58-33 vote.

The House had passed the measure earlier in the day on a vote of 240-154 with 211 Republicans, 28 Democrats and one Independent voting in favor of the measure, and 153 Democrats and one Independent voting against.
