The Convention on POPs was finalised in Johannesburg in December 2000. It aims to phase out persistent organic pollutants on a voluntary basis and to permanently restrict or put a complete stop to the involuntary use of these chemicals. Twelve products are includes on this list of chemicals: hexachlorobenzene, endrin, mirex, toxaphene, chlordane, heptachlor, DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) dioxins and nitrofurans (see European Report 2592 for further details).Klaus Topfer, Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), appealed to governments of countries that are signatories to the Convention to ratify the Convention so that it can ...
