Small American flags wave gently in front of more than 29,000 graves in Hampton National Cemetery today, a rippling carpet of red, white and blue.
Flags, three inches high and five inches wide, for Civil War soldiers and sailors, 227 Confederate and an unknown number who fought for the Union. For veterans of the Spanish-American War, two World Wars, Korea and Vietnam, and for their wives and their children. For the 29 German sailors who drowned when their submarine U-85 sank off the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1942. For German and Italian prisoners of war who never made it home.
