The Brazilian aluminum industry consumes 6% of the power generate in the country. Due to the government" power rationing program the sector will have to save 25% of its consumption and may also have to close down someo of its plants to reach the goals. The domestic aluminum industry employs 50,000 people and collects US$700mil/year in taxes and generates US$2bil in foreign exchanges, according to Abal (Associacao Brasileira da Industria de Aluminio).
