May 29--Rhode Island's biggest employer is CVS. But that's no surprise.
What nobody would have guessed just five years ago is that two defense contractors made it into the top five private employers in the state this year.
Think back to 1996. The Cold War had been relegated to the history books, and jobs at General Dynamics and Raytheon were threatening to go the same way.
Back then, the workforce at General Dynamic's Quonset Point shipyard had shrunk to fewer than 1,000; Raytheon's Portsmouth facility hovered at 950. Buyouts and pink slips were flying.
