For three decades, Judge Melvin J. Peterson was a fixture in the Hennepin County District Court - a probate judge known for his fairness when dealing with often complex cases involving divisions of estates, the placing of an elderly parent in a nursing home or the guardianship of the mentally ill.
"He became a kind of prototype of a probate judge," said former U.S. District Judge Miles Lord, who once dubbed him "Mr. Probate."
