Legislation aimed at closing a significant gap in Medicare coverage for kidney transplantation has been introduced in the Senate and House of Representatives. The legislation would extend Medicare coverage to end stage renal disease patients (ESRD) whose Medicare eligibility is based solely on their ESRD status. Those patients currently remain limited to Medicare coverage for 36 months post-transplant.
The legislation was introduced by Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) - S. 880, and Representatives Dave Camp (R-MI) and Karen Thurman (D-FL) - H.R. 1839.
