This is a curious volume, long in gestation in its present form. It is based on papers from a conference in Paris in 1985, and originally appeared in French in 1988. During the prolonged process of translation into an English edition, both editors died, as have several of the contributors, including Ashin das Gupta, who was to have written the foreward for this edition. Instead the volume has been finalised by another scholar of Asian trade, Sanjay Subrahmanyam, ...
