Whatever ultimately happens with campaign finance reform, no one doubts that money will continue to play a huge role in politics. An equally safe bet is that, for the foreseeable future, telecom companies will be doing more than their share to keep American politics awash in corporate cash.
What got the telcos to open their wallets in a big way was, of course, the prospect of deregulation, and a couple of scholars, Robert W. Crandell of the Brookings Institution and Thomas W. Hazlett of the American Enterprise Institute, have neatly summarized how the process worked.
