Calling current U.S. strategy in Southeast Asia "embarrassingly out of date," a recent report from the Cato Institute casts a critical eye on Washington's post-Cold War expansion of its military ties with Southeast Asia in the form of new agreements, training exercises, naval visits, weapons transfers and implicit security guarantees.
The report, "Needless Entanglements: Washington's Expanding Security Ties in Southeast Asia," by Cato senior fellow Doug Bandow, argues that it is difficult to discern security threats to the United States emanating from Southeast Asia.
