Robert Edgerton is by any reckoning a very unusual scholar. He is a professor of both anthropology and psychiatry; a specialist in social order and values, deviant behavior, mental illness, retardation, alcoholism, and primitive societies; and an author of at least 18 books, four of which combine social and military history.
