I am one of those impatient people who can't wait to unwrap a gift when it is given to me. I love a surprise, but the suspense almost kills me so I don't waste even a second before I begin ripping away gift paper to see what is hidden behind it.
Consequently, when I found out that in several European countries it is impolite to open a present in front of the person who presented it, I was not thrilled. Still, to be socially and culturally correct, I hold back and adhere to the unfamiliar tradition whenever I visit France, Turkey or Luxembourg.
