FROM WHARF HILL, the house has presided over the heart of small-town Smithfield for more than a century, its turret windows gazing down on Main and Church streets, watching horse-drawn buggies evolve into model T's and, later, SUVs.
It has seen steamers and work boats on the Pagan River give way to smaller, speedier pleasure boats. It has watched Smithfield's Main Street regain a quaint charm with brick sidewalks and an inviting variety of shops and cafes, which attract locals and tourists alike. It has even watched the re-introduction of horse and carriage - this time a novelty - to the Colonial-era town.
