Hot summer pushes unitary to record of 4-million units

For four consecutive years, 1984 through 1987, the industry posted unitary totals of more than 3 million units. Three of those years set records. Shipments averaged more than 3.5 million units. Then along came 1988 and successive heat waves that pushed through the Midwest and Northeast.

For a market already buoyed up by burgeoning replacements and only slightly diminished by new construction, last summer's heat waves pushed unitary shipments past the 4-million mark for the first time. It was another new record that was made even brighter by inventory reductions.
