Drug courts reduce drug arrests and criminal activity, says a researcher who has been tracking the fledgling system that diverts nonviolent drug offenders into treatment instead of prison.
However, less is known about the impact drug courts have on drug use or employment by people once they leave the program, said Steven Belenko of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
