Jun. 3--IT'S A SNACK! IT CLEANS UP CRUD!: After Procter & Gamble Co. got government approval in early 1996 for its controversial fat substitute olestra, one of the first users of the substance was Frito-Lay, which sells a less-fat potato chip called "Wow!"
That could be the appropriate headline for P&G's latest proposal for olestra.
Disappointed with sales of the fat substitute, the company is talking with federal regulators about using its olestra-manufacturing plant to also make a product that could be used for environmental cleanups.
