Suicide in the third leading cause of death among 10- to 19-year-olds in the United States. More minority than white youths commit suicide.

To help in the early identification of youths at risk for committing suicide, doctors at the University of Minnesota reviewed data gathered as part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health in 1995 and 1996. The study data was gathered during two home interviews of over 13,000 students in grades seven through twelve. The two interviews were, on average, 11 months apart.
