BOSTON _ The word is that the Red Sox still are in the hunt for David Wells, the tempestuous left-handed pitcher now working for the Chicago White Sox. Both teams have dispatched scouts to evaluate players involved in a possible deal.
But let's say the Sox make the deal. Let's say they get David Wells. Then what?
Imagine if you will, it's the sixth inning of his first game on the mound for the Sox. He's working on an ugly seven-hitter and every inning has been a struggle.
He looks like an unmade bed. His belly is hanging over his belt, he has already thrown 110 pitches and he is gulping for air after every toss.
