The Office of the Ombudsman yesterday affirmed its authority to file a perjury charge in case of falsification in a statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN) in reply to a defense motion to quash the perjury case against former President Joseph Estrada.

Taking strong exception to the claim of lack of authority, Overall Deputy Ombudsman Margarito P. Gervacio Jr. asked, "How can the Ombudsman not have the authority to charge a malevolent SALN filer with perjury given his sweeping constitutional and statutory powers, and the fact that he is the legal custodian of the SALNs of top national elective officials?
