On April 20, Adolf Hitler would have been 100 years old, and on this anniversary of his birth an ominous cloud looms over the West German political scene. In recent months, ultraconservative (read neofascist) political parties have made stunning advances in local elections. In West Berlin the Republicans, recently founded by a former Nazi SS officer, Franz Schonhuber, won 7.5 percent of the vote in a January election, jackbooting the veteran Free Democratic Party right out of the city Parliament.
